The lazy person's guide to making money through affiliate marketing

Earn $5000 per month

Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn extra money, assuming you’re willing to put in the work to learn how to be successful with it. The biggest mistake that people make when they’re learning about affiliate marketing is thinking that you can just read one article, watch one video, or sign up for one class and then never have to think about it again. It doesn’t work like that. Becoming an affiliate marketer takes time and dedication, but when you do it right, you can make good money in your spare time without even realizing it.

Choose an online business

The first step in figuring out how to make money online is figuring out what kind of business you want. Do you want to sell a product, service, or both? Provide value through a newsletter or an e-book? The answer will determine your online marketing strategy. In general, it’s smart for beginners to focus on one type of business until they find their niche and figure out how to be successful at it before moving on.

Determine your niche

Before you get started, it’s important to determine what your niche is. This is a lot simpler than it sounds—basically, it means that you need to figure out who your audience is. This can be hard if you don’t already have a clear idea of your business model, but just start with an overall picture of who you think will be interested in your content.

Create your content

Post your content on your website. Don’t use third-party platforms like Facebook or Twitter. Even though those sites have massive audiences, you don’t own your content there and have no control over how much they charge you. In addition, studies have shown that if readers don’t own their content, they’re less likely to share it with others.

Do keyword research

Go out and do keyword research. Understanding what people are searching for is essential to any business—and search engines have a wealth of information on their users. Doing some simple keyword analysis will help you understand what your potential customers are looking for, which can lead you toward lucrative keywords. Identify keywords related to your niche and see if anyone else is ranking for them. If not, consider buying an ad on Google or Yahoo’s Search Network.

Contact suppliers

You should start by contacting a select group of companies with products or services you’re interested in promoting. When you contact a company, ask them how they handle affiliates and where they recommend you sign up. Their website should have all of the information you need on their program(s). If it doesn’t, email them for more details.

Monitor your stats

Just as you monitor keyword data and SEO rankings, it’s important to watch how your traffic is growing over time. Have you increased your daily or monthly readership? Is there an increase in social-media mentions of your brand? If so, it might be time to consider an aggressive growth campaign.

Take some risks

There’s a level of risk in entrepreneurship that many people shy away from. But if you don’t take risks, then you never find out what your limits are or how great you can be. You may even miss out on potential opportunities because you’re too fearful to step outside your comfort zone. If a certain idea doesn’t work, that’s fine—it just means it wasn’t meant for you at that time.

Do more work!

If you want to make money with your website, you have to work for it. No magic shortcuts here. Think about how many bloggers you see who are consistently publishing content – and more importantly, getting traffic back to their site – on a regular basis (not just once in a while). If that’s your goal, then make sure that 1) each of your posts has a specific topic/targeted keyword and 2) that each post is as helpful as possible on its own terms.
